WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman first baseman Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and three RBI as William Paterson (4-1) rolled to an 11-3 baseball victory against visiting U.S. Merchant Marine (2-4) March 13.

The Pioneers got on the board in the second inning. Junior designated player Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) led off with a double against the left-field wall and advanced to third on a Kenny groundout. Freshman shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) singled through the left side, scoring Pasternak, and a bunt single by freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and a throwing error put runners on first and second with one out. After Garguilo stole second, junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) singled through the left side, scoring Abel for a 2-0 lead.

The Mariners struck back in the top of the third, scoring two runs of their own. After loading the bases with no outs, Nicholas Kopacka flew out to center field, a sacrifice fly that plated Nicholas Dimas. Senior Tim O’Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) was able to get the next batter out, putting runners on first and third with two outs for USMMA, but a dropped foul ball extended the inning and a botched pickoff attempt allowed Joseph Policastro to tie the game.

The Pioneers responded immediately, retaking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. Junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) walked and stole second, and with two outs, Pasternak was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and later scored on a Kenny triple to left-center field.

The Mariners took advantage of Pioneer errors in the fourth. Grant Foley reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a throwing error and raced home on a second wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) tripled, driving in Flores for the Pioneers’ fifth run of the game.

WP added three to its total in the bottom of the fifth. Pasternak led off with a single and scored on Kenny’s second triple of the afternoon. Abel reached on a fielding error and stole second; Kenny scored on the throw down, and Abel went to third as the throw to the plate went over the catcher’s head. Flores then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Abel home for the Pioneers’ eighth run.

Back-to-back singles by Flores and Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills), a Gibbons sac fly and a Guillod triple made it a 10-3 score at the end of the seventh inning. Abel’s RBI-groundout plated freshman Jared Guglielmino (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) for a single run in the eighth to finish the scoring.

Pasternak was 2-for-3, hit a double and scored three runs, while Flores finished 2-for-4, drove in a pair of runs and collected two RBI. Six of WP’s 13 hits were for extra bases, including four triples.

O’Shea picked up his first win of the season (1-0), scattering four hits over 6.0 innings, striking out four and walking two while allowing three runs (one earned). Senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one, and sophomore Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth.

Andrew MacKinnon had the only multi-hit effort for USMMA, finishing 2-for-3. Starter Kyle Clausen surrendered two runs (one earned) and four hits in 2.0 innings. Timothy Arner took the loss (0-2), allowing three runs on two hits over 2.0 innings of relief.
