RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After helping the Manhattan College softball team open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a 4-0 record for the first time in program history, freshman Elena Bowman (San Mateo, Calif.) has been selected MAAC Rookie of the Week. Bowman went a combined 6-for-11 with three home runs and seven RBIs in doubleheader sweeps of Saint Peter’s and Iona over the weekend.

Bowman hit two home runs, a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the third, in game one of the doubleheader against Saint Peters’ at GaelicPark on Saturday. She added another RBI when she was hit by a pitch later in the third inning, then went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored in the nightcap. On Sunday at Iona, Bowman had a two-run homer in the first game before going 2-for-5 with an RBI in game two, as the Jaspers completed the sweep of the three-time defending MAAC champion Gaels. Overall, she hit .545 and slugged 1.455, while also notching an on-base percentage of .688 in the four games.

This marks the third time this season that Bowman has been recognized by the conference. She was named MAAC Player of the Week on March 12 and also earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors on March 18. Bowman currently leads the MAAC with nine home runs and ranks second in the league in RBIs (24), total bases (56), slugging percentage (.747) and on-base percentage (.479).
The first-place Jaspers (12-14, 4-0 MAAC) put their season-high five-game winning streak on the line on Saturday, when Rider (6-27, 2-2 MAAC) visits Gaelic Park for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
